Heron Rana - Tiny Sesh - 06.27.23

We met Heron while shooting video for Jakhari’s birthday show and immediately noticed her style. Growing up in Davis, California but living part time in Brazil, Heron has a way with music that is as unique as it is beautiful. We planned our shoot for a warm Tuesday morning without too much planning ahead of time, Heron brought only her saxophone, her voice and set up for one our best Tiny Sesh shoots to date. This was one of the turning points for me in understanding what a musician was. There was a certain confidence that she entered the room with, having a tangible level of mastery over the 23 keys on the saxophone. While setting up we were able to learn a little more about Heron, growing up in the band programs in school and taking inspiration from her cousin Eva Scow, music has alway been a part of her life. After high school she decided she needed to see what was beyond Davis and hitchhiked across the country on her own, making her friends and experiences along the way. Suddenly we understood where her confidence comes from. Now, a mother to her 6-year young son, she spends her time between Brazil and California making music and raising her child. It’s hard to pin a genre to Heron’s music but her 5-song set will take you on a journey with sounds from hip-hop, jazz, neo-soul, and Brazilian music. She describes her latest album, “In Her Glory” as “an EP based on real life stories, created by women, dedicated to women and about women (and non-binary people).” We had such an amazing time recording with Heron and cant wait to see what she does in the future. With less than 1000 monthly listeners at the time of writing this, Heron’s influence already shows with her fan base spreading from Spain, Australia, Switzerland and back to Sac.

While the growth of Heron Rana’s music career may appear slow and steady, her rise will be known around the world.
